• UDUS (Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto): This is the Federal University. It is the one that offers Medicine, Law, Pharmacy, and Engineering.

• SSU (Sokoto State University): This is the State University. As of the 2026/2027 session, it focuses strictly on Science, Arts, Education, and Social Sciences.

Admissions Alert: If you buy a JAMB form for Medicine and Surgery or Law and choose SSU, you have wasted your money. SSU does not offer these courses yet. You must choose UDUS for those.

Important Admission Secrets for 2026/2027

To secure admission into SSU, you need to navigate its specific requirements:

1. The “Indigene” Priority

• SSU is owned by the Sokoto State Government.

• Sokoto Indigenes: You get massive preference. Admission is almost guaranteed if you meet the minimum cut-off.

• Non-Indigenes: You are welcome, but you are competing for a smaller slice of the admission quota (Merit List).

2. The Cut-Off Mark Reality

• General Cut-Off: SSU is very student-friendly. They often set a university minimum of 140.

• Competitive Courses:

  • Computer Science / Microbiology / Biochemistry: Aim for 170+.

  • Education / Arts: 140 – 150 is usually sufficient.

3. Direct Entry (DE)

• SSU accepts NCE and National Diploma (ND).

• IJMB: SSU also accepts IJMB. If you have 6-7 points, you have a strong chance for 200 Level admission.

Does SSU offer Nursing Science? This is tricky. There is a College of Nursing Sciences, Sokoto which is a separate entity but often affiliates with universities for degree awarding. However, for the main JAMB UTME list, SSU does not typically list a B.NSc degree. Most students go to UDUS for Nursing. Always check the current JAMB brochure to see if an affiliation has been activated for this year.

Does SSU offer Medicine? No. SSU does not offer Medicine and Surgery (MBBS). Apply to Usmanu Danfodiyo University (UDUS) instead.

Is SSU School Fees expensive? No. SSU is one of the most affordable universities in Nigeria. For Sokoto indigenes, the fees are heavily subsidized. Even for non-indigenes, it is very cheap compared to southern state universities.
